We’ve all heard the popular phrase, “Dress for success” many times. It’s a familiar mantra of mentors, businesswomen, elders, teachers, even self-help books. Many consider it a major factor if you really want to be a success in the business world. In the past, it was all about looking like you belong in a particular environment. But, does the idea of dressing for success still mean blending in these days?

Dressing for Success: Past and Present

Some savvy businesswomen believe that it’s no longer about dressing to blend in… at all. In fact, many insist that dressing for success these days is more about dressing in a non-conforming fashion. It’s widely believed that this helps businesswomen come across as more accomplished and powerful.

As a matter of fact, a research team at Harvard Business School did a study on it. Anat Keinan, Francesca Gino and Silvia Bellezza wrote about it in the Journal of Consumer Research. According to Pacific Standard Magazine, they wrote that:

“…deviating from the norm when it comes to self-presentation ‘can act as a particular form of conspicuous consumption, and lead to positive inferences of status and competence in the eyes of others.’”

Arguments on What Dressing for Success Really Means

Their arguments tell us that dressing for success is more about defying the norm, than anything else. Bringing your own unique style to the table makes you look much more powerful and able in the business world. The report states:

“They argue that dressing in an unconventional way ‘signals that one has the autonomy needed to act according to one’s own inclinations.’ The fact you can get away with ignoring the unwritten rules (like Dr. House refusing to wear a lab coat) implies you have a high level of power and/or ability.”

What does dressing for success mean to you? Are you all about conforming to what the “norm” is around you? Or, do you go out of your way to be non-conforming when you dress for business life?

I’ve been building brands online for quite some time now. In the beginning, my main focus was on marketing… online marketing, inbound marketing, creating content, optimizing my websites, etc… Nowadays, I focus more of my attention on building an online reputation through blogging, speaking and networking.

As I got more and more into networking events, I learned that many people simply do not care about SEO, HTML and other anal parts of the web design industry. That means, I had to dig past my technical-mind to tap into other areas of my diverse makeup to capture the attention of other networkers.

Bottom Line: I had to learn how to re-brand myself as more than just a technical-minded web designer.

Tips for Re-Branding Yourself through Blogging, Speaking and Networking

Blogging, Speaking and Networking are excellent ways to re-build your personal brand.

It was important that I learn the value of my own personal brand. That means establishes healthy relationships and a good reputation among the various people within my industry. Once I understood this, the business opportunities became to just flow. I found myself surrounded by more like minded people, who were actually interested in seeing me, my brand and my business flourish. Blogging, speaking and networking played major roles in the learning process.

Here are a few tips to help you re-brand yourself through blogging, speaking and networking:

  • What is your story? That’s the one unique thing about you no one else can match.
  • Email your story. Use that mailing list of yours to send short emails, briefly telling your story, and ask for a short intro phone call at the end. This will lead to invites to even more networking groups and networking events.
  • Start speaking at events. You may have to pitch in order to speak at your first industry conference, panel or other event. But, once “they” come to love you, you’ll get invitations to speak all the time.

Tips from an Blogging, Speaking and Networking Expert

In the words of Nathaniel Broughton of Business 2 Community:

“I often say it’s important to have momentum. For your personal brand, that momentum comes in the form of the exact things that made up my transformation. Phone calls. Connections. Coffees. Published articles. Speaking gigs. Consistency. Time.”

Whether you’re an industry expert or an industry newbie, you must take time out to brand yourself. If you’ve been around for a while and simply don’t see that momentum Broughton speaks of above, then it’s time to re-brand yourself. One of the best routes to take to do just that is through blogging, speaking and networking.

Publish Your Pictures Online in Various Places to Build Your Brand Virally

Various studies have suggested that about 43% to 75% of all employers check the social media profiles of prospects before hiring them. So, just imagine what the stats are when it comes to potential clients researching your brand online.

That means that as a professional businesswoman, you should publish your pictures online in various places. And, they need to be professional pictures, or at least personal images that represent the brand you want potential employers and clients to trust. So, put your best foot forward, and make sure to publish photos you can be proud of throughout the business world.

  • Where should you publish headshots online? – Use your headshot photos as social media network profile pictures. They work great profile pictures on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and of course, the social media network for businesswomen, LinkedIn.
  • Where should you publish candid shots online? Candid shots make excellent cover photos on social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and more. It’s also a good idea to publish your candid shots in social media posts and on your timelines as well.
  • Should you use your image in your email signature? Of course you should. Sending emails to potential employers and clients that includes your picture in the signature adds a unique, personal touch. Just make sure it’s an appropriate image that represents your brand well.

Pictures have been telling stories since ancient times… long before written words were even invented. So, it’s no wonder that today, images are still a very effective way to illustrate stories. But, a picture of you actually giving a presentation to these future women entrepreneurs has a better chance of helping you connect with valuable businesswomen in your local area. So, how can your photos help build your personal brand online?

What Types of Photos Help Build Your Personal Brand?

Wondering exactly exactly what types of images you should use? Well, using a mixture of candid shots and headshot photos help build you personal brand online. Here’s how to use them to extend your online reach:

Headshot Photos Help Build Your Personal Brand

What is the purpose of a headshot when it comes to your online brand image? Typically, headshot images are used for profile pictures on websites, blogs, forums and social media networks. They are generally the first thing people notice when they visit your online profiles. So, make sure yours are updated, and actually reflect the image you want to portray for your personal brand. Hire a professional photographer or go to a photo studio if you have to. You can even have a friend snap a headshot for you, using a solid background cover. Just, by all means, do not use a selfie.

Candid Shots Help Build Your Personal Brand

What are candid shots? These are those great, impromptu photos taken by others without you knowing. They reflect your surroundings, while showing you interacting with others naturally. These types of photos help build your personal brand by demonstrating “what you do” as a businesswoman.

For a variety, mix it up a bit. Publish candid shots that show your work functions, community service efforts, speaking on stage, laughing with other businesswomen, interacting at business and networking events, etc… They should be representations of your personality as a woman in business.

Salary negotiations fill many people with fear, but studies show that women find them particularly challenging. So, as a woman, what’s your most powerful asset for negotiating a salary you can be proud of? Silence

“You have to remember that women are newer to the workplace,” says Katie Donovan, the founder of Equal Pay Negotiations, a consultancy that helps women get the pay they deserve. “Sure, we’ve been secretaries, teachers, and nurses forever, but in terms of executive positions that require negotiating a salary, we’re on relatively new ground. In my own life, my father taught my brother to negotiate, but my mother taught me to how to wear lipstick. Many of us did not have role models giving us the inside scoop.”

Donovan compares women’s struggle with negotiating their salary to the struggles of first-generation college students navigating a college campus. Students whose parents didn’t go to college may not fully understand the resources that are at their disposal and, as a result, not take advantage of them. Similarly, women may not realize that many companies set aside money with the expectation that employees will ask for better compensation packages—although, of course, they will not volunteer this extra money. The data back this up: Salary.com found that 84% of employers expect prospective employees to negotiate salary during the interview stage. Yet only 30% of women bother to negotiate at all, while 46% of men negotiate.

“I kept hearing about how women hardly ever negotiate their salary, while men almost always do,” Donovan says. “I set up this company because I didn’t want to see my nieces, who at the time were between 14 and 22, having the same conversations in their 40s about how much money they had left on the table that so many of my friends were having.” (That figure, over the course of a lifetime of not negotiating, could add up to as much as $2 million in lost earnings.)

Welcome back to my 2-part series on 6 Tips to Help You Achieve ‘The Look’ of a Successful Entrepreneur.

Return to Part 1

4. Be Picky About Who Shares Your Time

Any successful entrepreneur understands the value of time. To them, “spending time” often equates to spending money. The difference is that you can always make more money, but once time is gone, it’s gone for good.

You must always look successful if you want to become a truly successful entrepreneur... Kereen Henry

And, it’s because of that concept that you should only spend time with people who have something that makes you a better businesswoman, or person in general. Try not to find yourself using up leisure time in areas where you’re the smartest woman in the room. Instead, make sure you spend time where you’re being cultivated, sharpened and challenged.

5. Dress Up Your Cover

In the business world, people tend to “judge a book by its cover.” Therefore, you need to dress the part of a successful entrepreneur if you hope to someday become one. Oftentimes, just a few simple, low-budget wardrobe changes can strategically change everything in your business life.

No, your wardrobe doesn’t make you. However, it does make a major impact on how others perceive you… and how you perceive yourself. In other words, you need to look as though you belong in the circle of successful entrepreneurs you’re hoping to network with.

6. Never Shy Away from Taking Risks

A successful entrepreneur knows how to take risks quite well. You don’t just want to be a risk taker. You want to be a great one! And, the key to that is to just start taking risks.

How do you begin? Well, you can start by taking smaller risks that don’t carry such major downsides. In time, you’ll learn what it takes to weigh out the riskiness of a choice. Then, you can take your time increasing just how much risk you choose to take.

Taking the leap to becoming a successful woman entrepreneur is a major accomplishment in itself. Now, all you have to do is work hard to achieve your business goals and fulfill your destiny.

Do you believe in your heart that you will be a successful entrepreneur someday? Do you feel a since of power when you think about yourself as an entrepreneur? Do you think you’ll make it big really soon? Are you almost famous? In your mind, do you envision yourself as being worth a million bucks?

If this sounds like you, then you already have the attitude of a successful entrepreneur. All you need are some good tips to help you look the part until you can actually play it.

How to Take on ‘The Look’ of a Successful Entrepreneur

1. Fake It Til You Make It

Is your look stopping your success? Take on the look of a successful entrepreneur.

Is your look stopping your success? Take on the look of a successful entrepreneur.

This age-old phrase is actually built on legitimate science. According to psychologists, there’s a direct connection before the body and the mind. How you feel determines how you act, and vice versa. In other words, when you act a certain way, you’ll experience a corresponding emotion.

Your smile is the most common example of this concept. It has a way of actually making you feel happy. So, “faking” happiness will help to change your overall attitude. Eventually, you’ll find that you “made” yourself actually feel happy.

2. Always Act Confident

Confidence is one of the keys to becoming a successful entrepreneur. However, if your mind is cluttered with feelings of doubt and fear, you’ll have a very hard time projecting confidence.

Yes, even successful business women experience a little self-doubt every once in a while. But, the voices speaking the self-doubt in your ear is just an imposter trying to take you down. It’s up to you whether or not you want to succumb to the imposter’s lies, or continue project confidence no matter how loud the voices get.

3. Ask for the Help You Need

Really smart people understand what they’re incapable of doing. What’s make them even smarter is their ability to realize when it’s time to ask for help.

Why do I know so much about small business marketing? It’s simply because I know when to ask other people for their assistance.

Every businesswoman reaches a point in her life when her mental toughness gets tested. The test may be caused by a dead-end job, a business colleague, even a testy client. But, mentally tough businesswomen takes all types of tests in stride. That’s how we come out as winners at the end of the day.

8 Habits That Keep Me Mentally Tough in My Business Life

Ever tried to be mentally tough during a moment when you really feel stuck? It can be a bit of a struggle. However, you must remain steadfast and aim for breaking the mold. That means steering your mind into a new direction. In order to do that, you’ll need to be daring and gritty. It’ll take a lot of spunk… spunk that only a mentally tough person has.

Mentally Tough Businesswomen Need These Habits

Check out the 8 habits, the first of 16 I review in this 2-part article, which will help you improve your own mental toughness:

1. Be Intelligent Emotionally

Mentally tough businesswomen understand the habits they need to follow for any successful venture.

You must be capable of fully understanding negative emotions in order to have the ability to tolerate them. Then, you turn those emotions into something productive. That’s emotional intelligence.

2. Be Positively Confident

“Whether you think you can, or think you can’t—you’re right.” — Henry Ford

You either have the confidence to believe you will succeed, or your confidence tells you that you’ll fail. Either way, the confidence is there. It’s about how you choose to perceive it that counts.

3. Neutralize Poison

Sometimes, people can be the poison causing the toxic mental sickness in your life. Mentally tough businesswomen understand how to keep feelings under control. That, in turn, takes the power away from toxic, venomous people.

4. Embrace Change

Change happens whether we like it or not. The weak-minded allows change to cause negative feelings and thoughts within them. The mentally tough consistently adapt to change, making the flexible in both their personal and business lives.

5. Just Say No

Do you know that it’s actually mentally healthy for you to say no? It takes high self-esteem to present others with a definite “No” without worrying about how they’ll feel about you.

6. Understand Fear is Failure

Fear of taking chances causes regrets later. This is a form of failure, as you simply cannot succeed if you do not try. Mentally tough businesswomen are not afraid to take chances.

7. Embrace Failure

The road to success is paved with failures. Those who make to the successful end of the road took the time to admit to their failures, embrace them, and make the necessary improvements to do better next time. Looking outside the box leads to finding creative solutions in order to achieve success.

8. Don’t Dwell on Mistakes

Embracing your failures doesn’t mean dwelling on them. Mentally tough businesswomen understand the difference. Instead of focusing on the problem causing the mistake, fixate on the actions you need to take to not make the same mistake again.

To live a truly fulfilling life, you should pursue business ownership. It’ll allow you to have control over your own time. Plus, there’s a potential to build an empire that can be passed down for generations to come. Just look at the Hersheys, the Hiltons, the Fords, the Rockefellers! How do you feel about network marketing as a path to business ownership?

Network Marketing VS Traditional Business Ownership

There’s significant risk in the traditional path to business ownership, as failure comes with major costs. Most fail to actually turn a profit for at least 24 months, causing many to close up shop within the first five years. Not to mention the start-up and operating costs can be downright astronomical.

That’s why many entrepreneurial-minded people, myself included, turn to network marketing. Here are just some of the benefits of using network marketing to help you establish business ownership:

  • Generally takes a pretty small investment to start
  • Usually requires very little inventory in the beginning
  • Comes with a team (network) of people you can leverage
  • How much you make it completely up to you
  • Operating costs are extremely low in comparison to traditional business ownership
  • Your time is spent building your own business, versus just building some else’s

Failure is Always Possible in Life

Now, here are some stats for you to ponder, according to Teneshia “Miss Money Sense” LaFaye of Financial Juneteenth:

  • 97% fail at their network marketing ventures
  • 80-90% of all businesses fail as a whole
  • 95% of those who begin work at 21 years old will die or go broke by 65 years old

In other words, we all stand the chance of failing no matter what!

The bottom line is: I’d rather take the risk, versus spending most of my life building up the dreams of someone else just to retire with pretty much nothing. To me, network marketing is worth my time and effort because the potential rewards of business ownership are endless.

What is it that you love most in relation to your business brand? Do you enjoy giving advice, creating music, keeping up with sports? Are you a warm person, conversational, casual, deep?

Whoever you are inside that drives you to keep pushing to build your brand, be that person when marketing your brand as well. Your audience will be lured in by your authenticity.

2. Build Your Brand into an Empire by Showing Your Vulnerability

Don’t be fooled into believing that vulnerabilities are weaknesses. This is simply not true. Everyone is vulnerable to some degree. And, when you’re open to show your vulnerabilities, you show your audience that you’re an open, honest person.

It’s not about showcasing your secrets, mistakes or struggles. Instead, it’s about showing your human side in order to connect with the humans who choose to follow your brand.

3. Build Your Brand into an Empire with Integrity

Having integrity is about being honest, truthful, honorable and reliable. It’s about following through on what you say you’re going to do, consistently.

Make sure your brand portrays your consistency of character. This is very important when building a following while building and growing your brand.
